STEAMBOAT MOUNTAIN MUSIC BURSARY RENAMED IN HONOUR OF CAROL WILKIE
At the Steamboat Music Society AGM, on March 7th, 2022, members passed a motion to change the name
of the Steamboat Mountain Music Society Bursary to the Carol Wilkie Steamboat Mountain Music
Bursary, in memory of Edgewater’s beloved music teacher who passed away last August.
Carol was a true local treasure who helped nurture the love of music in dozens of aspiring musicians. After her death, Carol’s family requested that memorial donations be sent to Steamboat Society Bursary Fund. The Society is grateful for the trust the Wilkie Family has shown in our program. This new name will
honour Carol’s legacy and the importance of music education.
The Steamboat Bursary was established in 2012 and since then it has assisted many aspiring
musicians. Two Steamboat Mountain Music Bursaries for 2021 were announced at the recent
Steamboat Mountain Society AGM. In years to come, they will be announced under the Bursary’s
Invermere singer-songwriter Emma Postlethwaite won a Steamboat Bursary in 2017. Since then, she
has developed into a confident performer who has played the Steamboat Festival Tweener Stage
three times. She has appeared regularly on the Pynelogs Fresh-Fridays stage, and has been featured at
several local live music venues. She is currently preparing to make an album of her own compositions to
be released later this year. Steamboat Mountain Music Society was pleased to approve her
application once again in 2021. Emma is using the bursary to pursue more lessons to polish her guitar
Invermere piano teacher Tanya DuBois is the other bursary recipient for 2021. Tanya is using her
award to help pay the fees to complete her upper-level conservatory certifications, a combination of
in-person and online course work. The certifications will enable her to better support her most
advanced students. Both of these 2021 awards are investments in the future of music in the Columbia
