the Spruce Tops
Wayne Giles and Warren Nuevomen met as neighbours and quickly realized a common interest in both traditional Celtic and Bluegrass music. Both with musical backgrounds, they began selecting traditional instrumental folk songs and playing at local venues. From there they have branched off into new genres, always challenging themselves to learn a new style to perform. Some surprising major influences they have in common include Kenny Baker, the Chieftains, the Pogues, and Stéphan Grappelli. The Spruce Tops name came as an homage to the various “spruce topped” instruments they play. Instrumentally driven, the Spruce Tops bring a lively energy of traditional music from around the world that keeps everyone engaged (and sometimes brings out the Irish / Highland dancers). Their sets incorporate these various fiddle / guitar / tenor-banjo and mandolin styles that keep the audience guessing which traditional style they’ll whip out next. From melancholy duets played at weddings, to a stomping St. Patrick’s Day pub night, The Spruce Tops, frequently with guest musicians, keep crowds entertained with their unique style of playing and love nothing more than a packed venue, with the audience
clapping along to a roaring jig
